They are accepted as a matter of course, however, at the County Juvenile Detention Center in Tallahassee because the superintendent is Mark Howard, who will receive his master of fine arts degree from Florida State University next month. Howard and his wife, Sally, live in the home and are responsible for as many as 16 boys and girls up to 16 years age. One of five artists represented in the exhibition opening last night in the University Art Gallery, Howard will receive his degree in graphics. His bachelor's degree was in psychology.

"Sometimes I wish I had realized earlier I wanted to be an artist and had taken more courses in this field," he says but admits his broad experience probably will help him artistically and that the discipline of his undergraduate work is of practical value. As for his year at the detention home: "It has been a real experience; I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sally feels the same way." She buys and prepares all the food for the facility, with some help in cooking from the boys and girls who have been sent there by the court. Most stay only a few days, though some have been there more than three months. "It's like having a big family," the young couple agrees.

When it's garlanded with leaves and flowers and presented in a block of ice. Chefs of famous Scandinavian restaurants and ocean liners have used this theatrical approach for years. It's the best way to make sure vodka is "smoking as it should be. (It won't freeze, you know, because of the alcoholic content.) One can buy, in fancy hotel supply shops, a mold made especially for the purpose of producing icebergs around aquavit (the Vikings' caraway flavored vodka).

Whenever possible, they assign some of the jobs to their wards. "Finding things for them to do is our biggest Mrs. Howard confesses.
