Pollsters conducting a national shopping survey for the Grocery Manufacturers of America, Inc. asked the respondents, "just for fun," to pretend they had won a contest and could take home what they thought would be the weekly groceries of Fonda More people would rather take home the foods she selected. iff, i There's confusion in the aisles at Killearn Publix Lucy Corn couldn't figure out where to find the graham-cracker pie shells in the still-being-remodeled Killearn Publix. She knew the pie shells would be near the cake mixes, but where were those? She walked a few aisles to the left, then a few to the right Finally, a fellow shopper directed Corn to the right place.

"It's taking me longer (to shop), tit's just a hassle now," Corn said of dealing with products being shelves 6r even aisles away from where she's been used to seeing them. She added, though, that once the remodeling is done and she's learned where items are located, it will be great" to have a bigger store with more merchandise. I can sympathize with being disoriented in a grocery store. That's part of why I generally stick to just a couple of stores, so I can shop easily, knowing where thinp are. When the Parkway Publix remodeled, it took me a few months to feel comfortable there again.

Adding 5,000 new items The Killearn Publix had done a smaller-scale remodeling about two years ago. "I had just learned to know where everything is, and I have to learn all over again," a shopper told me. She half-jokingly said that because she's still orienting herself to where things are, "You end up buying more by having to go up and down the aisles looking" Randolph Maphis, manager of the Killearn Publix, says shoppers aren't the only ones having to learn where items now are. "It's hard for me to remember where everything is," said Maphis. Part of the problem is that the 1 one of five celebrities.

Choosing among Roseanne Arnold, Joan Collins, Bill Cosby, Jane Fonda, Madonna and Sylvester Stallone, 33 percent of the respondents picked workout queen Fonda's groceries, while 26 percent selected Cosby's and 14 percent picked Stallone's. Arnold got 9 percent, Collins rated 8 percent and Madonna's basket was last with 2 percent The nutrition and fitness concerns that emerged from the survey were reinforced by the grocery-basket question, said Peter Hart, president of Peter D. Hart Associates, which conducted the survey for the GMA. The pollsters also asked respondents to choose their biggest craving from among the following foods: chocolate, pretzels and chips, ice cream, pizza, fried foods or cookies. Chocolate was the winner with 29 percent, followed by pizza, 18 percent, and ice cream, 17 percent.

Cooking couples Couples who cook together stay together, according to a recent nationwide survey of men and women between 25 and 34 by All-Clad Metalcrafters. The majority (31 percent) of the couples surveyed claim that preparing food together brought them closer and 17 percent list "having dinner together more regularly" as an advantage. This juicy fruit is versatile and vitamin-packed 3 Mangoes taste like a cross between a peach and a pineapple. They can be eaten fresh or cooked in pies and breads.

By Felicia Gressette Miami Herald Keep it clean If you drink coffee at work out of a glass mug, the message from a group of Canadian researchers is: Scrub Your Mug! A group from South Peace Health Unit in Grande Prairie, Alberta, ran swabs around the rims of 90 disposable and reusable cups from four offices and sent the bacterial samples to a lab. Even though the mugs were washed and presumed clean by the people who used them, one in three ceramic mugs contained more than 100 bacterial colonies. It's not known how harmful the bacteria are because a lack of money forced the researchers to give up the study. But prior research has shown that food-poisoning bacteria thrive on ceramic mugs, according to Eating Well magazine. Just to be sure, regularly wash your office mug in hot soapy water.

One medium mango has about 135 calories; if you'd like to be more precise, two-thirds of a cup of mango has about 65 calories. A medium mango equals about iy3 cups of prepared fruit; 2 pounds of prepared mango fruit is approximately 1 quart Judge ripeness by fragrance, not skin color, which varies by type. A ripe mango smells rich and fruity and yields when you press it gently. Store mangoes at room temperature or in a paper bag to ripen them Once ripened, mangoes can be refrigerated for 4 to 5 days. Peeled, sliced fruit keeps 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.

You can freeze mangoes for 8 to 12 months. Mangoes are messy and juicy, but here's an easy way to cube them. Hold the mango upright and slice down along either side of the big, flat seed. Remove the seed, hold each disc in the palm of your hand and score the flesh in a crisscross pattern, cutting down to the peel but not through it. Push on the peel side with your thumbs to turn the slice inside out so the Please see MANGOES, 5E Here's a handy three-step test to make sure your mango is ready to eat The fullness test Do this before purchase.

Pick up the mango you're interested in and carefuly check out the area around the stem If it looks plump and round, that means the fruit was harvested when fully mature. Immature mangos will look shriveled around the stem, and may not ripen properly. The sniff test Do this before eating. Stem end up, take a big whiff of your mango. If it smells fruity, that's a good sign.

The squeeze test Do this before eating. Gently squeeze your mango in several places. If there is a slight give, combined with the fruity aroma in step two, your mango is ripe. If your mango still feels hard, let it rest for a day or so more at room temperature. If you leave the mango out too long, strong flavor and stringiness can develop.

From J.R. Brooks Son We can always tell that another mango season has begun because the phone will ring and some befuddled soul will ask: "Do mangoes have any cholesterol?" No, no, no! -Remember, mangoes are a fruit; cholesterol comes only from animal products. In fact, mangoes don't have any fat worth mentioning. They're highly nutritious: low in sodium, high in potassium and a rich source of vitamins A and C. More you should know about mangoes: Mangoes taste something like a cross between a peach and a pineapple.

You may use them in any recipe that calls for peaches or nectarines. ceiling isn't finished it should take another month of working on it at night when the store is closed and the aisle directories therefore aren't hung yet. Maphis and his employees often refer to small maps of the store when asked where items are; some of the maps are posted in the store. Temporary directories at the end of the aisles are designed to help shoppers, too. The remodeling, begun last October, gives the Killearn Publix the most grocery and frozen-foods space of any Publix in the 400-store chain, Maphis said.

The store now covers approximately 54,000 square feet, about one-fourth larger than before. This has enabled him to add some 5,000 items to his shelves, Maphis said. More Kosher foods I agree with the shopper who was looking at some of the more unusual ethnic foods, picking up one jar and then another, trying to figure out what they were. "It's amazing how much stuff is here," he said. Among the sections added, Maphis said, are Indian foods and bulk candies, nuts and dried fruits.

He's expanded his Kosher selections, especially in the frozen department. The Kosher frozen foods include Empire brand pizza, blintzes, breaded zucchini and mushrooms, fried Chicken, and beef, turkey and chicken pot pies. I noticed an expanded selection of vegetarian foods that mimic ones with meat, and along with those, some organic cereal products and juices. Sometimes, I saw familiar items, but in more sizes than in smaller stores. I'd never seen such huge bap of potato chips and tortilla chips, for instance.

The wines stretch almost a full aisle, and there's a section of Louisiana products that would make Paul Prudhomme proud. More 'exotic' produce In the produce area are many "exotic" items, including red bananas and baby bananas, for example, and shiitake and oyster mushrooms, plus lots of Latin produce. Four registers have been added, to speed checkout Deli renovations are still to be done, and a photo lab is coming in another month. The floors still need refinishing. Maphis can't wait till the work is done, having had more than his share of renovating: He was manager of the Northwood Publix when it was remodeled, and manager of the Parkway Publix when it was remodeled.
