March 1, 2001 LOCAL Tallahassee Democrat City re revamps Web site By John Sevigny DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER City officials launched their new Web site Wednesday, talgov.com, which has an updated look, simplified e-mail addresses for employees and access to thousands of pages of information on city services. Mayor Scott Maddox, City Manager Anita Favors, various commissioners and others celebrated the launch of the site by tossing toy, balsa-wood gliders off the second floor balcony during a ceremony at City Hall. The gliders were marked with the site's Web address. City officials also handed out promotional refrigerator magnets and pencils. The new site contains much of the same information as the old one but boasts a more consistent look on various department pages and is easier to navigate, officials said.

"The information is still there, but now it's presented in a more concise, more consistent form," said city spokesman Bill Behenna. The Web site includes everything from bus schedules to printable registration forms for parks department athletic programs.

Residents can also pay their utility bills online, check flight schedules at Tallahassee Regional Airport and review commission meeting agendas. The site will also include information on various city sponsored events. Danny Capp, a city Web master who helped design the site, said his goal was to present a tightly organized site that wasn't boring but made city information easily available. He also said that in planning the design, he leaned toward using more text than graphics, in part, because sites with many pictures aren't always compatible with the equipment that some disabled people rely on in order to use their computers. "We kept it heavily text-based, but we didn't want it so heavy on text that it was boring," Capp said.
